Plot

Mitsuha, a high school girl living in the town of Itomori, is fed up with her life in the countryside and wishes to be a handsome Tokyo boy in her next life. Later, Taki, a high school boy living in Tokyo, wakes up and realizes that he is Mitsuha, who herself has somehow ended up in Taki's body.
Taki and Mitsuha realize they have been transported into each other's bodies. They start communicating with each other by leaving notes on paper or leaving memos in each other's phones. As time passes, they become used to the body swap and start intervening in each other's lives. Mitsuha helps Taki in getting closer to his female coworker, Miki Okudera, and eventually landing a date with her, while Taki helps Mitsuha in becoming more popular in her school. Mitsuha then tells Taki about an upcoming comet and how she is excited to see it, as it will arrive at the same day as her town's festival.
One day, Taki suddenly wakes up back in his body. After an unsuccessful first date with Miki, he tries contacting Mitsuha but fails. He later finds that they have stopped switching bodies and eventually decides to visit Mitsuha in her hometown. Without knowing the name of her village, he travels around rural parts of Japan, relying solely on the sketches of the village's scenery that Taki drew from memory. Finally, a restaurant server recognizes the town in Taki's sketch as Itomori. He is then told that a fragment of the comet Tiamat had actually fallen to earth three years ago and destroyed Itomori, killing a third of the town's population. As Taki looks through the records of fatalities from the incident, he finds Mitsuha's name.
Attempting to reconnect with Mitsuha, Taki goes to Mitsuha's family shrine. Realizing that his and Mitsuha's timelines were actually out of sync the whole time, Taki drinks kuchikamizake that Mitsuha made and left behind as an offering, hoping to reconnect to her body before the comet strikes. He wakes up in her body and sees that he still has time to save the town. Convincing her friends about the comet, he gets their help in trying to evacuate the village. While they continue with their plans, Taki realizes that Mitsuha might be in his body at the shrine and heads there to meet with her.
Mitsuha's spirit awakens in Taki's body and wanders to the top of the mountain where the shrine is. Although they feel each other's presence, they are unable to see each other due to the two still being out of sync. As the sun sets, both Taki and Mitsuha realize it is twilight time, when they are transported back to their own bodies and are finally able to see each other. Taki tells Mitsuha to convince her estranged father, who is the mayor, to evacuate the town. They decide to write each other's names on their hands as they return to their respective timelines, but Mitsuha disappears before she could start writing her name, while Taki wrote "I love you" instead of his name. They desperately try to remember the name of the other, but eventually forget each other's names and events that had happened to them. Mitsuha and her friends appear to have failed in evacuating the village as the comet fragments hit.
Eight years later, it is revealed that all of Itomori's residents managed to survive, due to Mitsuha having persuaded her father in time to conduct an emergency evacuation drill over the surrounding districts. Taki has graduated from university and is trying to find a job, but still has lingering feelings that something important to him was missing. He finds himself attracted to items relating to Itomori, such as magazines and people he thinks are familiar (whom he actually knew when he was in Mitsuha's body). While riding separate trains, Taki and Mitsuha see each other when their trains pass by. They get out of their next stops and try to find each other. They end up meeting at a staircase and, feeling like they know each other somehow, ask for each other's name.

Plot

Fairy Tail is set in Earth-land (アースランド Āsu Rando), a fictional world populated by wizards[2] that coalesce into guilds to apply their magical abilities for paid job requests. Novice wizard Lucy Heartfilia runs away from home to join Fairy Tail, a guild famous for its members' overly destructive antics. She is invited into the guild by Natsu Dragneel, a dragon slayer (滅竜魔導士 ドラゴンスレイヤー doragon sureiyā) wizard who travels the kingdom of Fiore (フィオーレ王国 Fiōre Ōkoku) in search of his missing foster father, the dragon Igneel. Lucy forms a team with Natsu and his cat-like companion Happy, later joined by ice wizard Gray Fullbuster, armored wizard Erza Scarlet, and Wendy Marvell, another dragon slayer. The team embark on numerous guild missions together, including subjugating criminals, illegal dark guilds, and ancient Etherious (エーテリアス Ēteriasu) demons created by the dark wizard Zeref. After several adventures, a group of Fairy Tail wizards, including Natsu's team, encounter Zeref living in isolation on the guild's sacred ground of Sirius Island[4] (天狼島 Tenrō-jima). A battle over Zeref ensues between Fairy Tail and the dark guild Grimoire Heart, which attracts the attention of the evil black dragon Acnologia. The Fairy Tail wizards survive Acnologia's assault when the spirit of their guild's founder, Mavis Vermillion, casts the defensive Fairy Sphere (妖精の球 フェアリースフィア Fearī Sufia) spell that places them into seven years of suspended animation. Shortly after the missing wizards return, Fairy Tail participates in the Grand Magic Games (大魔闘演武 Daimatōenbu), a tournament held to determine the strongest guild in Fiore. In doing so, they prevent an unwitting government conspiracy to ravage the kingdom with dragons brought from the past through Eclipse, Zeref's time travel gate. Zeref, observing these events, decides to eradicate humanity for their continuing conflicts. Later, Fairy Tail wages war against Tartaros, a dark guild of Etherious that aim to unseal a book believed to contain E.N.D., Zeref's ultimate demon. Acnologia returns to annihilate both guilds, but is stopped when Igneel emerges to battle him, revealed to have sealed himself within Natsu. However, Acnologia kills Igneel, and Natsu vows to avenge him. One year later, Natsu returns from a training journey to discover that Fairy Tail's master, Makarov Dreyar, has been staving off an invasion by the Alvarez Empire, Zeref's military nation. Zeref and his forces assault Fiore, intending to acquire Mavis' physical body preserved beneath Fairy Tail's guildhall, which houses a wellspring of infinite magic power known as Fairy Heart (妖精の心臓 フェアリーハート Fearī Hāto). During the battle, Natsu learns of his origins as Zeref's younger brother, as well as the true incarnation of E.N.D., whom the death-seeking Zeref resurrected as a demon with the power to kill him. When Natsu fails to do so in their showdown, Zeref extracts Fairy Heart from Mavis to relocate himself to a new timeline where he may prevent the atrocities he and Acnologia have caused, destroying the present timeline in the process. Natsu incapacitates Zeref, and Lucy rewrites the book of E.N.D. to make Natsu fully human. Mavis, who is Zeref's estranged lover, is then able to lift their shared immortality by reconciling her love for him, allowing both to die peacefully. Meanwhile, Fairy Tail and their allies attempt to permanently imprison Acnologia within a space-time rift discovered by Lucy's ancestor, Anna Heartfilia. The rift's properties instead empower Acnologia, who escapes to destroy Earth-land while his disembodied soul traps all of the present dragon slayers in the rift to maintain his new, immeasurable power. Using the accumulative magic of the other dragon slayers, Natsu destroys Acnologia after Lucy and the other wizards immobilize the dragon's body within Fairy Sphere, freeing the dragon slayers from captivity. In the following year, Lucy publishes an award-winning novel based on her experiences at the guild. The award ceremony is attended by two strangers resembling Mavis and Zeref, who fall in love. Afterwards, Natsu and Lucy depart with their friends on a century-old guild mission,[5] continuing their ongoing adventures together.
